Red, White, and Blue

Today is Saturday the 3rd of July.   Once again I find myself in the Primary Presidency, but this time as a councilor.  We were just called a couple of weeks ago, and we needed to do a quarterly activity.  We came up with the idea of doing a bike parade for the 4th of July, and combine it with lessons about independence.   So the kids learned about the American Revolution and the creation of the American flag.  They also learned about Captain Moroni and the Title of Liberty, and even made their own.

Then it was time to begin decorating their bikes!  It was amazing how many bikes we had parked in the cultural hall, and the tables covered with streamers and balloons.   It has been raining off and on for the past couple of weeks, with little sunlight to be had.  We had tried to come up with a backup plan if it was too wet to have the parade.  We finally decided we would do what we could in the gym, and have some faith.  It began the day sprinkling and low clouds and it looked like any moment it might  just let lose with the rain.  Even as we began decorating bikes we could see the rain sprinkling outside the door.

Parents came back just in time for the big parade through the parking lot.  We had our Flag and the Title of Liberty at the front, and everything from bikes, scooters, strollers, and wagons lined up, and decked out.  The clouds parted, the sprinkling stopped, and we began to see a little bit of sun filtering through.  See, prayers are answered!   It was so good to see, and it felt very patriotic; transporting me back to my childhood and the 4th of July parade.

I hope that this is one activity that the kids remember, and I hope that they remember a little more than decorating their bikes.  I hope they feel that swelling of pride when they see the flag, when they hear a Sousa march, when they see red white and blue, and they will have a testimony that we are One Nation under God.
